An overview of this role

As Vice President of Engineering, you will oversee a globally distributed engineering organization that sits at the center of our product and platform strategy. You will help shape how we build the future of an AI-powered DevSecOps platform, partnering closely with executive stakeholders across the business to align engineering direction with company priorities. This is a hands-on executive role for someone who brings technical depth, experience exercising sound judgment in complex engineering environments, and a track record of building and scaling systems, teams, and product delivery.

In this role, you will own engineering across multiple product areas, strengthen how teams deliver reliable and modern software, and help advance our AI-native approach across engineering workflows, developer tooling, code review, and continuous delivery. In your first year, you will be expected to set a clear engineering strategy, grow the engineering management team, improve operational maturity, and create the conditions for high-quality execution in our all-remote, handbook-first environment.

What you’ll bring

• Experience leading large engineering organizations across multiple product areas in a distributed environment, including leadership through Directors and Senior Managers.

• Background building scalable frontend platforms or large-scale user-facing systems, alongside backend or infrastructure experience.

As a Staff Backend Engineer on the GitLab CD team, you'll be a foundational technical leader on a high-visibility greenfield initiative at the intersection of GitLab's core platform and its AI strategy. This is a greenfield initiative within GitLab's Deploy stage, building systems that bring true reconciliation, live state awareness, durable orchestration, and AI-native governance to GitLab's platform.

As a Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby on Rails) on the Plan: Knowledge group, you'll help shape how teams plan, document, and share knowledge in GitLab. You'll build and improve the backend systems behind Wiki, Pages, Markdown, and text editors, while also helping design AI-powered capabilities such as the planner agent and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations that connect GitLab's GraphQL APIs with external tools. In this role, you'll work closely with frontend engineers, Product, UX, and Security to create reliable, scalable systems that support both technical and non-technical users across GitLab's planning experience. You'll play a key role in how we integrate AI into CI/CD workflows, working on features that improve performance, reliability, and usability for people running millions of CI jobs, from small teams to the largest enterprises.

AI is a top priority in the year ahead. In this role, you'll go beyond using AI tools — you’ll design, build, and iterate on AI-assisted and agentic CI experiences. You’ll help define and implement patterns for how we measure success, how we instrument behavior in production, and how we account for large language model limitations in real-world environments. You’ll also help integrate GitLab's Duo Agent Platform into CI workflows at scale, on a foundation that's fast, reliable, secure, and observable.

In this role, you will:

• Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and UX partners to refine priorities: where we can move faster, where we’re missing data, and where there’s whitespace to innovate.
