An overview of this role

As a member of the Infrastructure Security Team within the Product Security Department, you will work with teams across GitLab to ensure that the components that comprise our public cloud infrastructure are built from the beginning with resiliency and set security expectations that our customers rely on to power their DevSecOps goals.

As a Staff Security Engineer, you will serve as a technical lead across the topics the Infrastructure Security team owns, including our SaaS Platforms (e.g. GitLab Dedicated, Cells) and Self-Managed offerings. You will define the technical direction for how the team approaches infrastructure security topics and combine hands-on execution with influence that reaches into partner engineering teams. You’ll drive business outcomes by ensuring that we pragmatically implement security capabilities into the platform that empowers critical software factories globally.

What You’ll Do  

• Set architectural patterns, reference implementations, and foundational security automation that shape how infrastructure security is implemented across GitLab
• Lead infrastructure security initiatives from problem framing through delivery, scoping ambiguous multi-quarter work into executable streams with clear success criteria
• Conduct and lead comprehensive security reviews and threat modeling for complex infrastructure components, identifying systemic risks and driving remediation across affected systems
• Set the team's approach to AI-assisted security engineering, identifying where AI can meaningfully increase leverage and establishing patterns others can adopt
• Serve as an authoritative technical voice for Infrastructure Security across our stakeholders, translating architectural tradeoffs into clear decisions for engineering teams and senior leadership
• Partner on technical planning, prioritization, and roadmap development to align technical work with business objectives
• Mentor and develop engineers, raising the technical bar and modeling inclusive collaboration
• Fulfill the Product Security Division Mission of securing GitLab Infrastructure with our own product ("dogfooding")  

What You’ll Bring 

• Expert knowledge of security for cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure), container orchestration (Kubernetes) and related infrastructure and data security topics
• Proficiency in multiple programming languages (Go, Python, Ruby) with a track record of delivering production-quality security tooling
• Extensive experience with Infrastructure-as-Code security (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation), policy-as-code, and automated compliance
• Hands-on experience applying AI to security workflows, with a point of view on where it creates meaningful leverage
• Track record of leading multi-team technical initiatives from ambiguous problem statements to measurable outcomes, setting technical direction that peer teams adopt
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain security tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership
• Familiarity with security certifications, frameworks, and standards (FedRAMP, ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI-DSS)

An overview of this role

We are seeking a Security Manager, Application Security to drive the AppSec team at the tactical and operational level within the Security Platforms & Architecture (SPA) sub-department. The Application Security team is a key and critical stakeholder in securing GitLab’s product offerings.

In this role, you will manage and develop a team of Application Security Engineers (Intermediate through Staff) who perform security reviews, threat modeling, vulnerability triage, and secure design consultations across GitLab’s product surface. Your team is the front line of Product Security: the people reading the merge requests, talking to engineers, and evaluating features’ security posture before they are released to customers.

You will operate in an environment where feature delivery and platform capabilities are accelerating, architectures and technologies are evolving, and teams are continually balancing ambitious product goals with a strong security posture. In this context, you will help Product Security:

• Ensure that material product security risks and tradeoffs are surfaced, acknowledged, and decided at the right leadership levels
• Own operational execution for the team and ensure it operates through operational excellence.
• Build capability across every team member through coaching, mentoring, and career development
• Drive automation and AI-assisted enhancements of repeatable and time consuming work.

What you’ll do

• Lead, develop, and mentor a team of Application Security Engineers focused on clearing roadblocks, career growth and development, coaching and mentoring.
• Own the team’s operational cadence end to end: triage rotations, Application Security review queues, milestone planning.
• Drive tactical execution of the Application Security program: scaling the team for non linear security gains, security reviews enhancements and secure design consultations for high-risk changes.
• Lead AI adoption within the Application Security team: leverage AI-assisted/automated workflows for review triage, threat model generation, code analysis, and operational toil reduction. Champion practical AI use without losing critical thinking rigor.
• Recommend and drive security-related technical and process improvements.
• Author and execute project plans for security initiatives. Set schedules and assignments, anticipate roadblocks, and measure performance against goals.
• Provide input on security architecture, features, and issues. Serve as a partner and enabler to Product and Engineering teams on application security decisions.
• Partner with Security Architecture, Infrastructure Security, Security Research, and Security Operations on end-to-end risk reduction, aligning Application Security work with broader Product Security objectives.
• Prepare and deliver meaningful, actionable metrics to Product Security leadership.
• Hire and build a world-class team. Train team members to screen candidates and conduct structured interviews. Build the team’s ability to grow itself.

What you’ll bring

• Demonstrable prior people management experience in application security or a closely related security engineering discipline, preferably in high-velocity R&D organizations.
• Deep familiarity with application security domains: secure code review, threat modeling, vulnerability management, secure SDLC, and common vulnerability classes (OWASP Top 10, CWE), whether from direct Application Security roles or from owning secure delivery of complex systems.
• Demonstrated success building trust with Product and Engineering peers, influencing security related decisions, and co-owning outcomes rather than acting solely as a gate.
• Comfort with AI-augmented workflows and enthusiasm for leveraging tools like GitLab Duo to scale the Application Security function, along with strong alignment to GitLab’s values and a track record of thriving in a highly collaborative, remote-first culture.

Application Security Engineers are part of our Security Platforms & Architecture team, which protects GitLab’s platform and products by identifying, prioritizing, and mitigating security risks across the entire product lifecycle. Composed of Security Architecture, Application Security, and Security Research, we combine strategic security architecture with operational application security to enable GitLab to be the most secure software factory platform on the market.

An overview of this role

We are seeking a Director, Product Security Architecture to lead our Security Architecture function within the Security Platforms & Architecture (SPA) sub-department and to serve as a strategic security partner to key product and engineering leadership groups across GitLab.

In this role, you will manage and grow a team of Product Security Architects and our closely-aligned risk and metrics engineer who are each dedicated to major product areas of Security, AI, and Core DevOps. Your team will focus on turning product security risks, requirements, and insights into clear architectural guidance, “paved roads,” and multi-quarter risk reduction programs that align with how Product and Engineering actually plan and deliver.

You will operate in an environment where feature delivery and platform capabilities are accelerating, architectures and technologies are evolving, and teams are continually balancing ambitious product goals with a strong security posture. In this context, you will help Product Security:

• Maximize risk reduction by identifying strategic opportunities that fit naturally into existing R&D work 
• Ensure that material product security risks and tradeoffs are surfaced, acknowledged, and decided at the right leadership levels
• Lead SPA/AppSec scaling strategies that increase coverage and support non-linear developer gains, with a clear focus on enabling developer velocity with minimal friction

While many strong candidates will come from a deep product security background, this role is also an excellent fit for experienced software or architecture leaders who have consistently delivered secure, resilient systems in complex R&D environments and are excited to lead security outcomes in close partnership with engineering.

What you’ll do

• Lead, develop, and mentor a team of Product Security Architects and closely-aligned specialists who are dedicated to major product functional areas (e.g., Sec Section, AI, Core DevOps)
• Own and continuously evolve the Product Security Architecture strategy and partnership model, shifting architects from embedded consultants to accelerators of secure architecture delivery, and serve as a strategic partner to Product and Engineering Directors/VPs 
• Oversee and mature the Product Security Risk Register, ensuring systemic product security risks are clearly articulated, prioritized with Product and Engineering, and paired with multi-quarter risk reduction plans that reduce long-term product security debt.
• Operate Product Security Architecture in a risk-aligned, business-enabling way that focuses Security Architects on the highest-impact, hardest-to-change architectural decisions, helping teams make clear, informed tradeoffs without slowing delivery.
• Define and drive security visions, standards, “paved roads,” and secure-by-default platform behaviors and configurations that enable product teams to make sound security decisions with minimal overhead, including evolving existing behaviors over time to strengthen the baseline security posture.
• Lead the Product Security AI strategy for scaling, including adoption of AI-assisted and platform-level investments that expand security review coverage, reduce toil, and support non-linear developer gains while enabling developer velocity.
• Partner with Application Security, Infrastructure Security, Security Research, Security Operations, Security Risk, and Security Compliance on end-to-end risk reduction, including security-related controls, quality standards, and integration of research and operational learnings into architectures.
• Define and track meaningful architecture-related metrics and Key Risk Indicators, and represent Product Security in cross-functional forums, clearly articulating risk, tradeoffs, and recommended paths forward.

What you’ll bring

• Significant experience (typically 10+ years) leading software, architecture, or application security initiatives in high-velocity R&D organizations, with a strong grounding in building and evolving complex software systems
• Strong application security and secure design literacy, whether from direct AppSec roles or from owning secure delivery of large-scale systems, including familiarity with common vulnerability classes, modern software architectures, and practical mitigation patterns
• Deep understanding of systemic product security risks in large-scale platforms, with expertise in at least some of: CI/CD and pipeline security, software supply chain security, identity and access management (AuthN/Z), AI/ML security, or multi-tenant SaaS architectures
• Proven ability to operate effectively in constrained environments: balancing business goals and risk reduction, focusing attention on the highest-impact, hardest-to-reverse decisions, and framing options in terms of risk, cost, and customer impact rather than absolutes.
• Demonstrated success building trust with Product and Engineering Directors/VPs, influencing multi-quarter roadmaps, and co-owning outcomes rather than acting solely as a gate.
• Experience designing and rolling out scalable security patterns—standards, “paved roads,” and secure-by-default configurations—that reduce risk while minimizing additional toil for product and engineering teams.
• Experience collaborating with Compliance, Audit, and Security Operations on the definition, implementation, and demonstration of security controls and security-related quality standards, and translating technical designs into clear language for auditors, engineers, and senior leaders.
• Experience supporting organizations through significant technology and architectural change (e.g., adoption of new languages and frameworks, or evolution from monoliths toward microservices or domain-oriented architectures) while maintaining or improving security posture.
• Ability to operate at multiple altitudes—from executive-level strategy and stakeholder alignment down to detailed technical design discussions when necessary—with excellent written and verbal communication in an all-remote, asynchronous environment.
• Comfort with AI-augmented workflows and enthusiasm for leveraging tools like GitLab Duo to scale the Product Security Architecture function, along with strong alignment to GitLab’s values and a track record of thriving in a highly collaborative, remote-first culture.

As a Manager on the Infrastructure Security Team within the Product Security Department you will work with teams across GitLab to ensure that the components comprising our cloud infrastructure are built with the resiliency and security expectations that our customers depend on to power their software factories. 

You’ll lead and develop a high-performing team focused on securing GitLab’s internal cloud infrastructure (e.g. internal tooling and Sandbox) and our FedRAMP-authorized SaaS offering, GitLab Dedicated for Government. You’ll redefine the benchmark for Infrastructure Security through relentless advocacy of our Core Values and Dogfooding. You’ll maintain strong partnerships with peers across GitLab (e.g. Infrastructure, Finance, Product, and Legal) to ensure that the team can contribute effectively to cross-functional initiatives, building security in from the foundation upward. When required, you’ll leverage your extensive infrastructure experience and conflict resolution skills to unblock decisions. You’ll collaborate with the Product Security Leadership to develop and refine the Infrastructure Security vision and strategic roadmap.

What you’ll bring

• Hands-on public cloud security experience (GCP or AWS), ideally with SRE background
• Practitioner-level CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, cloud-native, and serverless experience
• Track record of leading and implementing infrastructure automation in service of security (e.g. Chef, Ansible, Terraform)
• Experience managing infrastructure security in regulated environments (e.g. FedRAMP, PCI)
• Solid grasp of the current threat landscape, distributed architectures, infrastructure-level systems design, and threat modeling
• Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills across a range of stakeholders
• Comfortable operating in a remote, async, distributed environment with ambiguity and shifting priorities
• Experience managing and developing teams of 5+
