We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Reference Data team in the Unified Platform (UP) organization as part of our efforts to build a mid-frequency platform. UP consolidates data and technologies into a comprehensive solution, accelerating time to market. Optimizing decision-making and research, our platform simplifies implementing new ideas, enhancing our competitive edge.

As a Senior Software Engineer on one of the Unified Platform teams, you'll be part of a tight knit team of software engineers working closely with internal users (analysts, quants, traders) to develop innovative systems that enable research and trading. You'll experiment with emerging technologies to process data at scale. You’ll wrestle a mountain of data into human understandable insights.

What you’ll do in this role:

• Build and evolve data and platform capabilities that support mid-frequency trading research workflows
• Partner closely with internal customers to understand their needs and build intuitive self-service tools
• Develop software for large scale data acquisition, storage, accessibility, and visualization
• Design and operate scalable pipelines and platforms using modern "big data" and lakehouse patterns
• Improve reliability, observability, performance, and ergonomics across platform services
• Learn about market microstructure, financial instruments, and markets in which DRW participates or wants to participate in

What we need on the team:

• 5+ years of platform-level software development experience
• Strong computer science fundamentals; a degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
• Financial market & reference data familiarity — understanding instrument IDs, feed normalization etc.
• Experience building research platforms and/or supporting mid-frequency trading environments
• Comfort working within a globally-distributed team
• A background in some of the following a bonus:
• Big data technologies: Spark, Delta Lake, Iceberg, Kafka, Airflow and/or Argo Workflows
• SQL and data warehousing/lake querying patterns
• Cloud-native deployments: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes
• Observability: Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, Sentry

Location: This position is hybrid and can sit in Chicago, London, or New York City.

The annual base salary range for this position is $175,000 to $225,000 depending on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and relevant skill set. The position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. The Data Ecosystem team is an important part of DRW’s Unified Platform (UP) organization, building the platform capabilities, managed infrastructure, and metadata management systems that underpin our common query layer and power thousands of batch and streaming pipelines across DRW.

As a Team Lead of our Data Ecosystem team, you will lead a team of Data Engineers who craft the architecture of DRW’s data platform, establishing data infrastructure, creating metadata management tools, and scaffolding governance processes that accelerate the time to onboard datasets, curate them, and make them available throughout the firm. This role encompasses people leadership, technical leadership, product ownership, and hands-on development and support activities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of data engineers with a variety of skill sets, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Use strong leadership skills in mentoring, coaching, feedback, development, negotiation, and conflict management to enhance team performance and help people have a great experience in their work life.
• Coordinate closely with stakeholders to grow the userbase and deliver high-impact functionality to the data platform.
• Engage in hands-on software development and support activities.
• Drive project ownership, including defining requirements, scheduling, resource allocation, and ensuring timely delivery of projects.
• Consult with other development teams to understand how they engage with the data platform.
• Contribute to process discussions, challenging ideas and actively refining the team’s processes to maximize throughput.

Required Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience leading engineers in a technical environment, with a strong emphasis on mentoring, development, and team management.
• 5+ years of experience working with modern data technologies and/or building data-first products.
• Familiarity with the data modeling practices, storage systems, and compute frameworks common to modern data engineering, with a track record of leveraging this knowledge within a fast-moving data ecosystem.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of balancing and negotiating requests across multiple stakeholders.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Experience building, scaling, and supporting large data platforms, and familiarity with the use cases, modeling techniques, and ergonomics expected by data platform users.
• Experience managing technical roadmaps for platforms with a wide variety of users.
• Familiarity with the common needs of data platform users within financial firms.
• History of balancing feedback from multiple users, translating technical roadblocks, refining processes, and improving delivery.
• Ability to own projects, define requirements, and lead development and support initiatives.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, with the judgment and capacity to deliver data engineering and software engineering artifacts that fit the needs of our users.
• Track record of fostering collaboration and effective teamwork across global locations.

As a Senior Data Engineer on our Data Experience team, you will play an integral role in bringing vendor datasets into our data platform, governing our centralized data pipelines, consolidating data delivery infrastructure across disparate systems, and working alongside individual Traders, Quantitative Researchers, and Back-Office personnel to best utilize the firm’s data and platform tools.

Technical requirements summary:

• Have extensive experience designing and building data pipelines
• Have experience working within modern batch and streaming data ecosystems
• An expert in SQL and Java or Python
• Extensive knowledge of data modeling techniques
• Able to own the delivery of data products, working with analysts and stakeholders to understand requirements and implement solutions

What you will do in this role:

• Model, build, and manage data products built atop DRW’s Unified Data Platform.
• Work closely with Data Strategists to determine appropriate data sources and implement processes that onboard and manage new datasets for trading, research, and back-office purposes.
• Design data governance processes that enable discovery, cost-sharing, usage tracking, access controls, and quality control of datasets to address the needs of DRW trading teams and strategies.
• Continually monitor data ingestion pipelines and data quality to ensure stability, reliability, and quality of the data. Design monitoring and quality control software and processes.
• Own the technical aspects of vendor ingestion pipelines, coordinating with vendor relationship managers on upcoming changes, performing routine data operations without breaking internal users, and contributing to the team’s on-call rotation to respond to unanticipated changes.
• Rapidly respond to user requests, identifying platform gaps, and self-service opportunities that make the user experience more efficient.

What you will need in this role:

• 7+ years of experience working with modern data technologies and building data-first products.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proven ability to work in a collaborative, agile, and fast-paced environment, prioritizing multiple tasks and projects, and efficiently handle the demands of a trading environment.
• Proven ability to deliver rapid results within processes that span multiple stakeholders.
• Strong technical problem-solving skills.
• Extensive familiarity with SQL and Java or Python, with a proven ability to develop and deliver maintainable data transformations for production data pipelines.
• Experience leveraging data modeling techniques and ability to articulate the trade-offs of different approaches.
• Experience with one or more data processing technologies (e.g. Flink, Spark, Polars, Dask, etc.).
• Experience with multiple data storage technologies (e.g. S3, RDBMS, NoSQL, Delta/Iceberg, Cassandra, Clickhouse, Kafka, etc.) and knowledge of their associated trade-offs.
• Experience with multiple data formats and serialization systems (e.g. Arrow, Parquet, Protobuf/gRPC, Avro, Thrift, JSON, etc.).
• Experience managing data pipeline orchestration systems (e.g. Kubernetes, Argo Workflows, Airflow, Prefect, Dagster, etc.), delving deeply into low-level details.
• Proven experience in managing the operational aspects of large data pipelines such as backfilling datasets, rerunning batch jobs, monitoring event throughput, and handling dead-letter queues.
• Prior experience triaging data quality control processes, correcting data gaps and inaccuracies.

The annual base salary range for this position is $200,000 to $250,000 depending on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and relevant skill set. The position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
