The Role

As a Product Engineer at Counterpart, you own problems and drive outcomes. You iron out requirements with stakeholders, partners, and customers. You leverage AI for implementation. You verify the end-to-end result. You iterate until you move the needle.

You run projects with other Product Engineers and AI agents. You know when to delegate to a human, when to delegate to an agent, and when to do it yourself. 

YOU WILL

Own the Problem

• Take accountability for the outcome. 
• Talk directly to your users, stakeholders, and peers to discover the problem. 
• Translate business intents into functional requirements that engineers and agents can build against. Determine where human judgment is non-negotiable and where AI can augment or act autonomously. 
• Own the non-functional technical requirements. Specify the quality bar: performance, scalability, reliability, security, maintainability.

Build with AI

• Write production-quality code across the stack: Python, Django, AWS, React, and PostgreSQL. You are not afraid of any layer.
• Direct agents and review their output with domain depth. Catch what they miss across the functional and non-functional bar: correctness, edge cases, performance, security, testability, readability.
• Evaluate and improve agent output regularly. Track failure modes. Refine the prompts and patterns that lift the quality ceiling over time.
• Run projects that span other Product Engineers and agents. Coordinate work, manage dependencies, and keep things moving without micromanaging.
• Contribute to architectural decisions. Bring options and alternatives, not objections. Know when the elegant solution is the wrong call for a startup moving fast.
• Contribute to and manage the context harness as you build and deliver.

Verify and Iterate

• Surface delivery risks early. Bring solutions, not just problems. Keep your stakeholders informed without turning every risk into a meeting.
• Verify the end-to-end result yourself. Confirm the system does what the requirements say, and that the requirements were right.
• Drive adoption of what you ship. Documentation, enablement, and usage monitoring are part of the job.
• Monitor your services in production. Own the signal. Debug and fix what breaks.
• Participate in support rotations. When users run into issues with what you shipped, you investigate and fix them.
• Iterate until you move the needle. Shipping is not the finish line. Outcome is.

Raise the Bar

• Mentor engineers around you. Give direct, useful feedback. Leave things better than you found them.
• Make deliberate calls on technical debt: when to accumulate it, when to pay it down, when to refactor. Translate trade-offs into language that business leaders can act on.
• Operate to the engineering standards for quality, reliability, and operational excellence.

YOU HAVE

• 10+ years building production web applications across the full stack. The years are the floor, not the bar. What matters is whether you have actually done this: owned a problem end-to-end, written the spec, built the thing, coordinated the work, and shipped it without someone else holding the thread.
• Demonstrated experience gathering requirements directly. You have interviewed users, customers, and partner teams, and turned ambiguous intent into specs that engineers and agents can build against.
• Demonstrated experience owning both functional and non-functional requirements. You have defined what a system must do and held the line on how well it must do it.
• A track record of owning a domain or initiative without close supervision. You have navigated ambiguity, made judgment calls, and been accountable for the outcome.
• Extreme ownership and a bias for action. You do not sit and wait. You chase stakeholders, customers, and answers when you need them.
• Experience coordinating across engineers and AI agents on a shared initiative. You have managed the work without holding a formal management title.
• Strong technical judgment and the depth to catch what AI-generated code gets wrong: not syntax, but correctness, architecture, intent.
• Proficiency with Python and Django. Working knowledge of TypeScript, React, and PostgreSQL.
• Proficiency in developing with AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, OpenAI Codex, similar) and the drive to stay ahead of how AI development practices are evolving.
• Domain curiosity. You learn the business context your work supports, not just the systems. You understand why the problem matters, not just how to solve it.
• The ability to communicate clearly across engineering, product, and business, translating technical complexity without losing meaning.
• Low ego and high Emotional Quotient (EQ). You influence without authority, take feedback well, and leave your ego out of technical decisions.
• Experience working with distributed, remote teams.

HOW THIS ROLE WORKS

Product Engineering exists to collapse the distance between a problem and a working solution. You own a problem or part of a vision. You shape it with stakeholders. You build it with AI. You verify it end-to-end. You iterate until the metric moves.

You work within the Context Architecture, a shared system of documentation, design patterns, and domain knowledge that gives you the technical context to make autonomous decisions at every step.

This is not a role for engineers who need to be told how. It is a role for engineers who can take a problem, fill in the gaps with good judgment, and ship something that works.

• Tony Nguyen, Engineering Manager: Tony is an engineering and platform leader with 25+ years of leadership experience at companies like Sony PlayStation Network, Intuit TurboTax, and ServiceNow. He thrives at building products, scaling teams, and leading organizations, but more so building people. He believes the best leadership and engineering comes from bringing your full identity to work. For him that's faith, family, and sports! Outside of work, you can catch him on the couch with his 3 adult children watching anime, going to Disneyland, or having game nights.
• Ron Alexessen, Engineering Manager: With experience at Hewlett-Packard, New Relic, Rackspace, and consulting agencies, Ron has built teams and shaped technical culture across different environments. He's passionate about AI-enabled development as a force multiplier and building solutions that create real business impact. Outside work, he boulders, runs, rides gravel bikes, and co-parents active teenagers, embracing structured chaos in all of it.
• Newton Truong, Engineering Manager: Newton joins Counterpart with 7+ years of experience in platform and data engineering. In his last company Thrive Market, he had a hand in building out new microservices and architecting data pipelines with Airflow and Spark. He's vegetarian and loves trying new restaurants when traveling. Nowadays he's busy keeping up with his 2-year-old and doing outdoor activities with his family.

Our estimated pay range for this role is USD $90,000 - $110,000 annually. Contractor compensation is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, market data, location, internal equitability, and experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Claims Manager  - Professional Liability (Dental)

Counterpart is a management and professional liability insurance platform for the 21st century workplace. As member of the Claims team, you will be one of the initial users of, and key feedback providers for, our active claims management processes and systems. Your input will help to shape and improve how we fulfill our mission of providing world-class service through tightly managing legal costs, making data-driven decisions when analyzing a claim’s value, and ensuring that other potentially responsible parties pay their fair share. This will necessitate close collaboration with Claims leadership, our internal Data and Engineering teams, and our carrier partners.

YOU WILL

• Complete accurate and timely investigations into the coverage, liability, and damages for each claim assigned to you.
• Actively manage each claim assigned to you in a way that produces the most timely and cost-effective resolution.
• Build and maintain positive and productive working relationships with internal and external customers, including policyholders, brokers, carrier partners, and Risk Engineers (underwriters).
• Direct and monitor assignments to experts and outside counsel, and hold those vendors accountable for meeting or exceeding our service standards. 
• Support our data collection efforts and models by effectively using the Counterpart claim system to fully and accurately capture critical details about each claim assigned to you.

• Identify and escalate insights into emerging claims trends across industries, geographies, and key business segments.
• Offer user-level feedback and insights to support the continuous improvement of our claim handling processes, guidelines, and systems.
• Ensure that every touchpoint with our insureds and brokers is representative of our brand, mission, and vision.

YOU HAVE

• At least 10 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years of experience litigating or managing dental professional liability claims. Previous carrier experience is a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree required; law degree (J.D.) and professional designations (RPLU, AIC, etc.) highly preferred.
• Must possess all required state claim adjuster licenses, or be able to obtain them within 90 days of hire.
• Proven ability to work both independently on complex matters and collaboratively as a team player to assist others as needed.
• High level of personal initiative and leadership skills.
• Exceptional time management, problem solving and organizational skills.
• Comfort and skill operating in a paperless claims environment and using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc.). Additional familiarity with Google Docs Editors suite is a plus.
• Willingness to use creative thinking and data-driven insights to overcome obstacles to resolution.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to succeed in a full remote workplace environment, and travel as necessary (approximately 10-15%).

• Eric Marler, Head of Claims: An industry veteran, Eric has more than 20 years of experience working with or for insurers offering management liability solutions. He is a licensed attorney who began his career in private practice before transitioning in-house. Prior to joining Counterpart, Eric held leadership roles at Great American Insurance Group and The Hanover Insurance Group.
• Dan Dubick, Claims Manager: Dan has worked across the insurance claims industry, including medical professional liability with MAG Mutual and Fortress Insurance and automobile liability with State Farm. A licensed attorney and mediator, he has held roles spanning legal practice and claims management.
• Tobias Schuler, Head of Data Analytics: After becoming a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and working as a consultant actuary at EY for several years, Tobias went on to drive the actuarial data & systems teams at QBE. He further leveraged his deep insurance and technical expertise at Munich Re Digital Partners in North America, where he headed data and analytics and oversaw the data infrastructure behind some of their largest programs.
• Chris Shafer, Chief of Staff: Chris is a published scientific author, having studied the neural correlates of gratitude at the lauded Brain and Creativity Institute. He has since helped to launch numerous businesses in which he held a variety of critical roles from product management to business operations to strategic partnerships. Chris received his bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Southern California.

As a member of the risk engineering team, you will be responsible for the production of premium through proper risk analysis and effective distribution through our digital distribution partners. In collaboration with the Territory Managers, engineering, and operations team, you will leverage your industry knowledge and broker relationships to develop management liability and professional liability insurance products that brokers are eager to promote to their clients.

AS AN ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE YOU WILL:

• Process and quote submissions accurately and on time: Work through a high volume of incoming management and professional liability submissions using Counterpart's digital platform, following established underwriting guidelines and procedures to generate timely, accurate quotes.
• Learn and apply ML/PL underwriting fundamentals: Build working knowledge of policy forms, coverage terms, rating procedures, and authority parameters under the guidance of senior Risk Engineers and your team lead.
• Follow up on open quotes: Actively work your quote queue.  Reaching out to brokers on pending submissions, answering straightforward inquiries, and escalating non-routine or over-authority situations to the appropriate team member.
• Support broker relationships: Engage with brokers in your assigned territory with responsiveness and professionalism, providing reliable service on routine submissions and helping reinforce Counterpart's reputation at every touchpoint.
• Capture and relay broker feedback: Surface broker reactions, questions, and market observations to your team, contributing to the information loop that helps the team improve guidelines and the quoting experience.
• Represent Counterpart in your territory: Participate in broker meetings and local industry events to build familiarity with the market and support Counterpart's visibility.
• Work toward production targets: Contribute to team premium and submission goals, tracking your individual progress and flagging obstacles to your manager.
• Leverage AI:  Use Counterpart’s Agentic AI tools to help in your daily workflows

• 1–2 years of underwriting, insurance, or related experience, with exposure to management liability, professional liability, or specialty lines preferred but not required.
• Eagerness to learn ML/PL products: Curiosity about policy forms, coverage terms, and risk assessment, with a willingness to build technical knowledge quickly on the job.
• Strong attention to detail and follow-through: Comfortable working through high-volume, process-driven workflows accurately and consistently.

• Jade Rabacal, National Distribution Lead: Jade brings an end-to-end insurance background spanning retail, wholesale, MGUs, and a legacy carrier. She is the National Distribution Lead at Counterpart, driving growth across all product lines and verticals. Prior to Counterpart, she served as Vice President of Business Development within the Cyber and Professional Lines Group at Tokio Marine HCC. Jade is known for her broker-centric approach and ability to build scalable partnerships in complex risk markets.

As a member of the risk engineering team, you will be responsible for the production of premium through proper risk analysis and effective distribution of our Allied Healthcare Professional Liability products. In collaboration with the engineering, design, data, and operations team, you will leverage your industry knowledge and broker relationships to underwrite and grow Counterpart’s Allied Healthcare book of business, spanning E&O and GL, and related professional liability coverages for healthcare practitioners and social service providers. You will play a key role in building broker demand and establishing Counterpart as a leading Allied Healthcare market.

AS A PRODUCTION FOCUSED RISK ENGINEER YOU WILL:

• Achieve and exceed underwriting performance and revenue goals for the Allied Healthcare Professional Liability segment, underwriting in accordance with our stated procedures.
• Price Allied Healthcare accounts with competitive terms quickly, thoughtfully, and in accordance with our guidelines, demonstrating a deep understanding of healthcare practitioner exposures and risk dynamics.

• Manage quote-related communication and questions in a thoughtful and trusting manner, serving as an underwriting resource to brokers on Allied Healthcare coverage nuances.
• Collaborate with the Director, Allied Healthcare Liability and the broader underwriting team of Risk Engineers on understanding the unique exposures of complex Allied Healthcare accounts.
• Provide market feedback and recommend improvements to our Allied Healthcare terms, rates, guidelines, coverage structures, and policy forms to maintain competitiveness and profitability.
• Support the development of underwriting guidelines, decision trees, and rating logic specific to Allied Healthcare classes in partnership with the product and data teams.
• Bind accounts through the continuous engagement of your assigned brokers, maximizing quote-to-bind efficiency across the Allied Healthcare portfolio.
• Represent Counterpart at broker meetings and various industry events, positioning the company as a thought leader in Allied Healthcare Professional Liability.
• Contribute ideas and feedback on our suite of tools and services as a key stakeholder of our product roadmap, helping to shape digital workflows and automation for Allied Healthcare underwriting.

• 3–7 years of underwriting experience in Allied Healthcare, Healthcare Professional Liability, or closely related professional liability lines (e.g., Social Services, Miscellaneous E&O, Medical Professional Liability).

As a member of the risk engineering team, you will be responsible for the production of premium through proper risk analysis and effective distribution of our Lawyers Professional Liability (LPL) products. In collaboration with the engineering, design, data, and operations team, you will leverage your industry knowledge and broker relationships to underwrite and grow Counterpart’s LPL book of business, spanning E&O, incidental GL, and related professional liability coverages tailored to modern law firms and evolving legal practices. AS A PRODUCTION FOCUSED RISK ENGINEER YOU WILL:

• Achieve and exceed underwriting performance and revenue goals for the Lawyers Professional Liability segment, underwriting in accordance with our stated procedures.

As a Pricing and Systems Actuary, you will balance being a prolific individual contributor to initiatives at the intersection of data science and traditional actuarial work. You will help bridge the gap between the Data & Insurance teams by leveraging actuarial techniques such as pricing and risk modeling as well as new techniques such as machine learning and programming. In addition, you will contribute to the culture, rituals, and processes that underpin a high-functioning team and the organization more broadly. 

AS A PRICING AND SYSTEMS ACTUARY, YOU WILL: 

• Build and maintain new efficient/expansive rating systems and related models in Python and in Excel. Building a system ultimately allows the team to help steer the portfolio more effectively
• Build and maintain risk/simulation models to help analyze and steer the business
• Research ways to leverage industry data to enhance current rating, new/current admitted filings, and provide guidance to underwriting
• Develop complex analyses of our underwriting, operations, business development, product performance, and user experience
• Assist the data science, operations, and insurance teams with ad hoc analysis, data normalization, data cleansing and process improvement
• Support the integration and production of new data sources in a manner that minimizes development cycles while maximizing potential business applications
• Continuously challenge how we can improve our underwriting and operations
• Maintain a clean production environment such that the data models can be easily interpreted and built upon by other data science and engineering team members
• Present your work, findings, and opinions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

WE LOOK FOR TEAMMATES WHO HAVE: 

• Minimum of 3 years of total work experience, including P&C insurance.
• Strongly preferred but not required: ACAS, FCAS (this a hybrid actuarial and analytics role)
• 2+ years experience with Python.
• Bachelor/Master in a quantitative discipline (computer science, actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, economics, physics, engineering, or related field).

Our estimated pay range for this role is $120,000 to $170,000. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, market data, location, internal equitability, and experience.
