The Role

Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our growing Data and Innovation team. This role sits at the intersection of power systems engineering, energy economics, and applied machine learning to support Carbon Direct's mission of accelerating science-based carbon management. You will work with the team of engineers, climate technology experts, and applied researchers: contributing to client engagements, internal analyses, and the development of best practices across our decarbonization work.

Responsibilities

Develop and operationalize ML/AI models to support real-time and forward-looking models, including load, generation, price forecasting and renewable (wind/solar) generation forecasting
Design, evaluate, and analyze electrical systems relevant to decarbonization pathways, including electrification, grid integration, power electronics, and low-carbon energy technologies.
Contribute to long-range transmission and integrated resource planning, including renewable integration assessments and production cost modeling
Conduct rigorous technical due diligence on projects, technologies, and proposals involving electrical infrastructure, energy storage, or industrial electrification.
Translate complex engineering analyses into clear, actionable recommendations for clients, internal teams, and executive stakeholders.
Collaborate cross-functionally with scientists, policy experts, and business development teams to support client deliverables and thought leadership.
Contribute to publications, technical reports, and external communications related to electrification and grid decarbonization.
Stay current on developments in power systems modeling , climate technology, grid modernization, and industrial decarbonization.

Qualifications

Required:

Master's or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related quantitative field
Expertise in the electric power industry, with exposure to wholesale electricity markets and/or grid operations
Proficiency in AC/DC power flow models, experienced in working with production-cost models such as PROMOD, Plexos, AURORA
Proficiency in statistical modeling, forecasting, and data analysis (Python, R, MATLAB, or equivalent)
Deep familiarity with energy market structures (ISOs/RTOs), capacity markets, resource adequacy frameworks, and reliability standards
Experience deploying machine learning models in production environments
Experience working across multidisciplinary teams, strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex analytics to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred:

Experience modeling energy storage systems, EV infrastructure, building electrification, or industrial decarbonization.
Familiarity with GHG accounting, energy policy, or carbon market frameworks.
Prior experience in consulting, policy, or a climate-focused organization working with corporate clients.
Professional licensure (PE) or advanced credentials in relevant electrical engineering domains.
Published or public-facing technical work in electrification, grid modernization, or related areas.
Knowledge and experience with ISO/RTO operations
Familiarity with FERC regulatory proceedings and filings and power market design
Knowledge of natural gas/power market dynamics

Salary Range

$133,000-$195,000 a year

The Role

Overview

Carbon Direct is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Hybrid Decarbonization Scientist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting deep diligences and conducting scientific assessments of decarbonization technologies, strategies, and projects. You will play a critical role in ensuring the scientific rigor and integrity of our advisory services, working closely with clients to evaluate solutions that effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A significant part of this role involves translating deep expertise in Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), biomass with carbon removal and storage (BiCRS), and biochar projects into recommendations for a range of clients.

Responsibilities

Support comprehensive scientific evaluations of hybrid decarbonization technologies and strategies, including BECCS, BiCRS, and biochar.
Perform in-depth technical and operational due diligence on decarbonization projects and initiatives to assess feasibility, risks, and potential impact.
Conduct life cycle assessments (LCAs) to evaluate the environmental performance and carbon accounting of decarbonization projects, ensuring methodological rigor and alignment with industry standards.
Apply expertise in sustainable biomass sourcing principles and supply chain considerations to evaluate feedstock viability and environmental integrity for relevant projects.
Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the latest advancements in climate science, technology, and policy relevant to decarbonization efforts.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, economists, and policy experts, to integrate scientific insights into client recommendations and strategies.
Prepare detailed reports, presentations, and technical documents to communicate findings and recommendations to clients and stakeholders.
Stay abreast of emerging trends and developments in the field of decarbonization, participating in conferences, workshops, and professional networks to continuously enhance expertise.

Qualifications

Proven experience in conducting scientific research and assessments in the field of decarbonization, with a strong track record of published or disseminated work.
Ph.D. or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Environmental Science, Climate Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (not required, but nice to have).
Extensive knowledge of decarbonization technologies and strategies, including their technical, economic, and environmental aspects.
Ability to effectively interface with external clients and internal stakeholders, providing excellent, responsive service
Specific expertise in BECCS and biochar projects, including their development, implementation, and assessment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct rigorous technical and financial evaluations.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Proficiency in relevant software and tools for data analysis, modeling, and simulation.
Commitment to staying current with industry trends, scientific advancements, and best practices in decarbonization.
Experience in consulting or advisory roles, particularly in the climate or environmental sectors.
Project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

Overview of the Opportunity

Carbon Direct receives many client requests to diligence carbon projects. We are looking to bring on additional contractors to assist with project reviews. These cover a wide range of carbon dioxide removal and reduction technologies and would be appropriate for advanced graduate students (Masters or PhD level) in climate science fields (e.g., forestry, engineering, chemistry, environmental science, ecology) who are interested in gaining work experience.

A review is generally a short report that follows a set template and examines the project proposal in the context of six quality criteria. Work is conducted with the oversight of a Carbon Direct senior scientist and subject to rigorous QA/QC. We operate a deliverable-based payment schedule based on the anticipated length and complexity of each assigned review.

About the Role

We are seeking experienced contractors to support technical due diligence for carbon projects globally. Contractors will provide country-specific expertise related to carbon projects, which could include land-use change, reforestation, improved forest management, biomass sourcing, political, regulatory, and economic contexts, social and cultural dynamics, and supply chains. The role involves research, analysis, and/or stakeholder engagement, with the potential for in-person site visits, culminating in written deliverables that assess project risks and opportunities.

This is a project-based, contract position. Work assignments will vary based on project needs and contractor expertise.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct technical due diligence, including reviewing project documentation, analyzing risks, and assessing regulatory and economic considerations.
Gather and synthesize relevant data, industry trends, and best practices to support project assessments.
Provide subject matter expertise on specific project components, such as policy frameworks, stakeholder dynamics, or technical feasibility.
Engage with project teams, partners, and stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.
Participate in site visits when necessary, assisting with interviews, meetings, and field evaluations.
Deliver comprehensive written reports and recommendations based on research and analysis.

Qualifications & Experience

Experience in technical due diligence, impact assessments, or feasibility studies.
Expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Biomass sourcing
Afforestation / Reforestation / Revegetation (ARR)
Agroforestry
Improved Forest Management (IFM)
Biochar

Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
