THE OPPORTUNITY

The Security & Integrity department at ActBlue works to protect from threat actors that might target ActBlue, our donors, or the campaigns and organizations that fundraise on our platform. Our security program is anchored in empathy for our stakeholders, which is a primary value for our team.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager, Security to help lead our Security team. This is a role that demands a diverse skillset, you will directly manage a team of security engineers while maintaining deep hands-on involvement in security related work. You will partner with the Sr. Director of Security and Integrity to own the security team’s strategic roadmap, drive cross-functional partnerships with Engineering, Legal, IT, and your peers in Payments and Fraud helping the team to manage both day to day work and improvement of Act Blue’s security program.

The ideal candidate brings both strong managerial depth helping teams to plan and execute tactically as well as deep technical depth in security engineering and a genuine passion for developing people. You’ll help set the technical direction for the team, ensure we’re building the right capabilities to defend ActBlue, and create an environment where security engineers thrive and grow in their careers and skills.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Team Leadership & Development: Mentoring, and growing security engineers. This includes running 1:1s, career development planning, performance reviews, and building a culture of continuous learning around evolving threats and technologies.
• Security Execution: Partnering with engineers on your team and the Sr. Director of Security and Integrity you’ll define and prioritize the team's quarterly and annual security initiatives, aligning them with business objectives and frameworks like NIST CSF, CIS Controls, or SOC 2. Translating risk assessments into actionable engineering work.
• Routinely you’ll run daily standups with the team and help the team plan, coordinate, and shepherd tactical work to be done.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partnering with Platform, SRE, Legal, IT, Compliance, and Product teams to embed security into the SDLC, incident response processes, and vendor management workflows. 
• Incident Response & Preparedness: You’ll help the team to maintain the Security incident response program: runbooks, running tabletop exercises, on call schedules, and ensuring timely response to alerts and events.
• Product and Cloud Security: Drive product security practices and cloud security posture across our AWS infrastructure, ensuring secure architecture, configuration, and continuous monitoring of our production environments.
• Vulnerability & Risk Management: Overseeing application security testing (SAST, DAST, SCA), penetration testing programs (including bug bounty), and ensuring vulnerabilities are triaged, prioritized, and remediated within SLA.
• Defining and tracking KPIs (mean time to detect/respond, vulnerability remediation rates, coverage metrics) and reporting security posture to executive stakeholders.
• Corporate Security: Partnering with IT, you and the team will help ensure strong protections in corporate security including spam, EDR, and device security is mature and well executed.
• Vendor & Third-Party Risk: Helping the team evaluating security vendors, and overseeing third-party risk assessments.
• Budget & Resource Planning: In coordination with the other department managers; manage the security budget, justifying tooling spend, headcount requests.

WHAT YOU BRING

• 5–7 years managing a team of security engineers or similarly technical ICs. Demonstrated experience with hiring pipelines, structured interview loops, performance calibration, performance, and career laddering. 
• Comfortable running daily standups and weekly 1:1s as core rituals, not afterthoughts.
• Familiar with translating frameworks like NIST CSF or CIS Controls into quarterly OKRs and sprint-level work. 
• Hands-on experience building or maturing a security program at a mid-size or growth-stage organization. 
• Experience overseeing AppSec tooling (SAST, DAST, SCA, Container Scanning, Secrets) and programs like penetration testing or bug bounty. 
• You know how to set remediation SLAs and hold engineering teams accountable to them without creating adversarial relationships.
• A background working with or managing engineers who build and tune detections in a SIEM, manage alert pipelines, and reduce noise
• You understand the operational side of security monitoring — not just deploying tools but making them effective.
• Experience running an AI forward team of engineers. You’ll know how to find quick solutions to problems and you’ll help the team to similarly seek out speed and quality of execution via AI related tooling.
• A track record of working across engineering, SRE, platform, IT, and legal orgs. 
• You can navigate competing priorities and translate security requirements into language that product and platform teams will act on.
• You have deep familiarity with cloud security (AWS), Application Security (particularly web native apps and authentication),  endpoint security (EDR), email security (anti-spam/phishing), and device management.
• Experience evaluating security vendors, running third-party risk assessments.
• You have defined and reported on security KPIs like MTTD, MTTR, vulnerability aging, and coverage metrics. 
• Demonstrated domain expertise in one or more core security domains and secondary specializations, (e.g. infrastructure security, application security, corporate IT security, security operations)

Work Schedule: 

This role requires availability during established, regular business hours (Mon-Fri) and is expected to be a part of an on-call rotation which will result in working nontraditional hours as needed.

• Collaborate with leaders across the organization to develop and execute on a data strategy inline with ActBlue's near and long term goals, including supporting organizational growth through acquisitions and partnerships

THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Staff Engineer on the AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Access) team, you will be a leading technical expert on one of ActBlue's most critical teams spanning Product Engineering and Platform. AAA secures the front door for everyone who powers progressive fundraising -- we make sure the right people get in, the wrong ones don't, and the platform never has to choose between moving fast and staying safe.

You'll provide technical leadership for multi-quarter initiatives involving complex requirements and strategic thinking, working collaboratively with engineers to plan and execute while playing a key role in defining the team's tech strategy and roadmap. This includes owning architecture decisions across identity, authentication, authorization, and access -- work that every other product at ActBlue depends on.

Working full-stack with Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, React, and TypeScript, you'll architect systems and establish technical foundations that enable secure, scalable, and reliable access for donors, campaigns, organizations, and ActBlue employees. Your work will directly impact thousands of users who depend on these systems every time they interact with ActBlue.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Lead the technical execution of AAA's highest-priority initiatives -- including unifying login across ActBlue products and shifting to role-based, least-privilege access controls at scale -- owning architecture decisions and ensuring stability throughout while the platform modernizes underneath them.
• Work with the team to architect, refactor, and improve identity and access systems that serve donors, campaigns, organizations, and internal users, breaking down initiative-level work across multiple epics and contributing technical expertise to shape the team's roadmap prioritization.
• Partner with designers and product managers to help shape the team's roadmap, anticipating important information needs from stakeholders to inform project work and proactively raising potential competing product interests.
• Serve as a technical consultant and go-to resource for engineers across teams on complex architectural decisions, system design, and best practices -- particularly in the areas of security, identity, and access control.
• Collaboratively develop and champion best practices and design patterns to improve the maintainability and security posture of the platform.
• Lead and expand the team's adoption of agentic AI development tools -- developing playbooks, coaching engineers, and helping AAA serve as a model for AI-accelerated development across Product Engineering.
• Demonstrate technical leadership through writing documentation, establishing effective testing and monitoring, and fostering clear and audience-oriented communication.
• Coach and mentor multiple members of the team, creating professional development opportunities and fostering a culture of seeking feedback as a tool for growth.
• Create spaces for individuals to be engaged, valued, and heard, setting examples and cultural expectations around inclusivity within the team.

WHAT YOU BRING

• 6-8 years of relevant professional experience, with demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership for multi-quarter initiatives involving complex requirements, strategic thinking, and cross-team collaboration.
• Strong OOP fundamentals required — Ruby, Python, Java, C#, Kotlin, or similar. We work in Rails; functional programming background is a plus. We hire for how you think, not the languages you've used.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Senior Software Engineer II, you will be a key technical leader on a team building and evolving a new strategic platform. Working full-stack with Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, React, and TypeScript, you'll architect systems and establish technical foundations that enable sophisticated user-facing features. Your work will directly impact thousands of users who depend on reliable, accurate, and performant systems.

You will work in concert with other product teams, data teams, platform and ops teams, and the security team. Together with other stakeholders, you will identify and execute high-impact improvements that unlock new product opportunities and ensure the reliability, predictability, maintainability, and scalability of our platform.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Work with your team to architect, refactor, and improve donor and entity user experiences.
• Lead the technical execution of large, cross-team initiatives, working with multiple engineers to design and implement solutions that balance high-impact opportunities with effort, scope, and technical tradeoffs.
• Break down initiative-level work across multiple epics and contribute technical expertise to shape the team's roadmap prioritization.
• Partner with designers and product managers to help shape the team's roadmap, anticipating important information needs from stakeholders to inform project work and proactively raising potential competing product interests.
• Serve as a technical consultant and go-to resource for engineers across teams on complex architectural decisions, system design, and best practices.
• Collaboratively develop and champion best practices and design patterns to improve the maintainability of the platform.
• Demonstrate technical leadership through writing documentation, establishing effective testing and monitoring, and fostering clear and audience-oriented communication.
• Coach and mentor multiple members of the team, creating professional development opportunities and fostering a culture of seeking feedback as a tool for growth.
• Create spaces for individuals to be engaged, valued, and heard, setting examples and cultural expectations around inclusivity within the team.
• Receive support from your manager to grow as an individual and increase your impact on the success of your team and the progressive movement.

WHAT YOU BRING

• 5-8+ years of relevant professional experience, with demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives involving multiple engineers, complex requirements, and high ambiguity.
• Professional experience working with React and TypeScript to develop frontend features from design and discovery through to deployment and monitoring.
• Professional experience working with backend technologies like Ruby on Rails, Python, Java or Go.
• Professional experience with PostgreSQL and GraphQL, including designing efficient data models and APIs that support scalable, maintainable systems.
• Proficiency with Git/GitHub and Docker as part of a professional software development workflow, with experience collaborating across distributed codebases.
• A strong understanding of performance, scalability, and security best practices, with ability to recommend system-level improvements to mitigate concerns for broad systems; familiarity with OAuth/OIDC/JWT authentication patterns is a plus.
• Track record of leading large projects that involve multiple engineers, complex requirements, and ambiguity from conception through delivery.
• Experience designing simple, maintainable solutions to complex problems using well-accepted design patterns informed by industry experience; exposure to microservices or micro-frontend architecture is a plus.
• Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders and to collaboratively translate business requirements and strategic goals into technical solutions, modifying communication style to fit the audience.
• Track record of working closely with product and design teams to iterate on and refine product requirements, with ability to break down initiative-level work and contribute to roadmap prioritization.
• Experience serving as a technical consultant and trusted resource for engineers seeking guidance on architecture, system design, and complex debugging; familiarity with Node.js/Express.js or Kubernetes in a professional context is a plus.
• Comfort with or curiosity about AI coding assistants (such as Claude Code) as productivity tools within an engineering workflow.
