ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Product Manager in the Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York City. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. 

The ACLU’s Technology team partners with departments across the ACLU to build and maintain innovative, robust, and secure digital products and technical systems that accelerate the ACLU’s mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties. We are a team of engineers, designers, product managers, and administrators who take pride in creating technical solutions that help raise money, get our message out in the world, mobilize our supporters, and manage our data with integrity.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Director of Product Management, the Product Manager works collaboratively with leadership, tech team members, and stakeholder teams across the organization to drive product development for our fundraising CRM and data management product, services, and platforms. The Product Manager will play a leading role in building products to enable internal teams to work more efficiently such that the ACLU’s fundraising, advocacy, engagement and communications needs are best met.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Collaborate with other product leaders to create and execute on the product roadmap for products that support the ACLU’s nationwide fundraising program. Initially, this will involve building and maintaining custom tooling to enhance and integrate with our Fundraising CRM.
• Work closely with stakeholders to explore and identify product requirements for projects added to the tech team’s roadmap. Be able to define lean minimally viable products (MVPs) that solve real problems and have measurable success metrics.
• Build strong relationships with stakeholders in Technology, Development, MarComms, Organizing, and Privacy & Data Governance to understand their department-specific needs. Prioritize goals and build a strategy for each product that is in-line with the organization’s goals and priorities. The Product Manager will support these colleagues in program creation and management for effective onboarding, training, and support.
• Manage timely updates and communications about the projects and workstreams for your team, adopting the best format and channel for different stakeholder or user groups.
• Work closely with leadership to justify product roadmap decisions and overall product strategy choices. Iterate and make changes to strategy and roadmap when data or landscape changes require so.
• Help establish product-driven success metrics for projects you lead. Report back on these success metrics and convene conversations so that all members of the team understand how products are performing and what that means for the broader roadmap.
• Collaborate closely with engineers, SMEs, and others to explore problem areas and ensure designed solutions best solve well-defined problems. Have experience facilitating an inclusive product development process to ideate and execute in a healthy fashion.
• Work with the Analytics team to understand how products are performing and where further optimizations are needed. Iterate on the product roadmap for your area of ownership to ensure analytics-driven insights are being acted on.
• Be a great storyteller! Be comfortable presenting roadmaps, product requirements, usage analysis and more to leadership, team members, stakeholders and others in order to help them understand the power of product-driven development.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• Familiarity with CRMs, especially Salesforce and Blackbaud products (ie: NPSP, NGOC, BBCRM).
• Experience working with or managing technical vendors.
• Strong understanding of digital security, accessibility, and privacy issues
• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills and the ability to make decisions and implement projects in a team-oriented environment
• Experience in nonprofit or campaign fundraising, education, advocacy or rapid-response environments strongly preferred.
• Experience in launching successful digital products, including shaping and driving strategies for infrastructure and data management.
• Experience working on cross-functional product teams of engineers, designers and analysts to ideate, build and deploy digital products.
• Capable of writing product briefs and/or specs in order to define requirements for the design and engineering phases of product development.
• Demonstrably strong customer and stakeholder empathy including using this empathy to ask questions and build solutions that address explicitly defined needs.
• An ability to work with varied stakeholders to propose, prioritize, and select projects and to create product roadmaps

The ACLU Technology Department is a broad umbrella covering both the ACLU’s Analytics and its Product & Engineering teams, two robust and innovative divisions that power the work of the ACLU. The department provides trusted, dependable, and impactful analytics, engineering, as well as product management and product design expertise for the ACLU. In partnership with experts across the ACLU, the technology team delivers best-in-class solutions, services, and innovation that advance the ACLU mission and organizational priorities. The tech team strives to ensure the ACLU leads by example in the ethical use of technology by ensuring privacy and security standards are maintained, directional insights are used to inform programming and business strategy, best-in-class products are designed to get the ACLU message out into the world and grow the ACLU supporter base, as well as to help steward high standards for algorithmic fairness, accountability, and transparency.

This position sits on the Product & Engineering team of the Technology Department. The Product & Engineering division includes engineers, product managers, product designers, and project operations experts who build and maintain engaging digital products and secure technical systems that accelerate the ACLU’s mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties.

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the Director of Engineering, Data will be responsible for stewarding the organization’s constituent data platform and leading the engineering team that designs, builds, and operates a centralized and robust multi-sourced pipeline and data warehouse ecosystem. This role will work closely with peer leaders in engineering, analytics, and product as well as stakeholders in other departments to set and drive long-term data architecture, design, implementation, and monitoring that meets current and anticipates future organizational needs.

This role requires a strategic and operational technical leader who can operate effectively in ambiguity, translate priorities into platform and product direction, and lead engineers across experience levels while driving complex cross-functional initiatives. The ideal candidate combines strong technical judgment and decision-making under uncertainty with a passion for solving real nonprofit technology challenges, and a proven ability to build, mentor, and guide high-performing engineering teams through clear vision, coaching, and hands-on technical leadership.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Own the vision and technical roadmap of the organization’s constituent data products, including the data warehouse, pipelines, system to system integrations, orchestrations, and transformations that power the organization’s fundraising, advocacy, and online outreach activities. Ensure that owned data products support reliability, scalability, performance and security requirement
• Lead and develop a team of data engineers, ensuring high-quality, timely delivery, and creating stability and focus during periods of shifting priorities and ambiguity
• Co-own the organization’s shared data and analytics infrastructure, including strategy and architectural decision-making, in partnership with Analytics Engineering leadership
• Own data product investment strategy and technical prioritization, balancing product needs, privacy and security requirements, system quality, and long-term platform sustainability
• Serve as a strong technical leader to the team, capable of executing hands-on when needed, providing architectural guidance and reviewing your team member’s technical work
• Act as a core partner and advisor to stakeholders in security, privacy, fundraising, and other areas where you will provide a strong engineering perspective on major data-related decisions including communicating risks, tradeoffs, and progress in digestible business terms as well as managing expectations proactively.
• Partner with peer leaders to understand, translate, and address gaps or improvement opportunities within the department related to technology, collaboration, team health, operational workflows and other internal needs
• Advise on resource planning, personnel decisions, and team structures to meet current and anticipate future needs of the department
• Hire and onboard new engineers, setting the tone, policy, and goals for building a diverse, high-quality engineering team
• Manage key vendors and service providers to ensure delivery of high-quality work that meets the organization's data and engineering standards and requirements

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• Senior engineering leadership experience leading a data engineering teams with multiple direct reports, strategic planning, goal setting, and other leadership responsibilities
• Strong technical background with hands-on experience designing, building, and orchestrating data pipelines, system to system integrations, data transformation and storage solutions, or other data infrastructure solutions and related operational workflows in a high-volume production environment
• Demonstrated ability to set longer-term architectural priorities while maintaining the ability to break those priorities into deliverable milestones
• Strong experience operating in rapidly changing environments and partnering closely with multiple discipline stakeholders
• Experience leading complex technical projects and guiding teams through planning, system design, prioritization, and execution
• Experience managing and displacing legacy software tools and systems as well as delivering complex and highly technical initiatives.
• Ability to problem-solve with engineers on architectural trade-offs and technology selections while building and maintaining strong execution cadences
• Proven experience operating in complex organizational environments, navigating uncertainty, overlapping ownership, and evolving priorities to drive coherent system outcomes

The ACLU Technology Department is a broad umbrella covering both the ACLU’s Analytics and its Product & Engineering teams, two robust and innovative divisions that power the work of the ACLU. The department provides trusted, dependable, and impactful analytics, engineering, as well as product management and product design expertise for the ACLU. In partnership with experts across the ACLU, the Technology Team delivers best-in-class solutions, services, and innovation that advance the ACLU mission and organizational priorities. The Analytics division includes analysts, data scientists, survey experts, social scientists, and analytics engineers that support evidence-based decision making and bring quantitative insights on our issues to the courtroom and the public.

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Data Science Manager — Algorithmic Justice Specialist and collaborating closely with our DevOps Engineering Team, Product Manager for Discovery, and Algorithmic Justice Fellow, the Data Scientist II, NLP Specialist, will support development and evaluation work for high-priority, carefully scoped projects using NLP to support the ACLU’s mission. In this role, the NLP Specialist will be responsible for evaluating proposed uses of generative AI and non-generative natural language AI systems, providing recommendations on whether AI tooling is appropriate or ill-suited for various tasks, and when appropriate, contributing to the development and implementation of AI-based solutions to support the organization’s mission.  

YOUR DAY TO DAY

• Work with various teams and departments to evaluate proposed AI use cases for feasibility and alignment with ACLU values and requirements related to privacy, security, transparency, bias, and environmental impacts  
• Provide recommendations to department and organizational leaders on whether AI tooling is appropriate or ill-suited for various tasks and use cases 
• Develop recommendations and architecture plans for intentional, carefully crafted uses of NLP tooling, appropriately selecting generative or non-generative AI systems and related guardrails and monitoring based on the context and requirements of the use case 
• Contribute to the development and implementation of AI-based solutions when appropriate, collaborating with various departments to ensure successful design, deployment, and continuous evaluation of such systems 
• Contribute to the establishment of AI governance practices and standards in collaboration with colleagues across the organization 
• Contribute to the development of context-specific, high-quality benchmarks for language modelling systems tailored for civil rights and public interest organizations 
• Contribute to various other projects supporting the ACLU’s litigation and policy work by applying natural language processing methods to policy or regulatory text data  
• When relevant, collaborate with academic and civil society researchers to turn your learnings and insights into resources to benefit other public interest organizations 
• Brief departmental leadership on relevant AI research and developments and prepare materials for senior leaders’ speaking engagements on AI issues 
• Communicate to non-technical audiences—including ACLU lawyers, policy advocates, and other staff—details of how large language models (LLMs) and small language models (SLMs) are designed and deployed, including their civil rights implications 
• Implement tooling to estimate the environmental impact of deployed AI systems

• Substantial expertise and training in the field of natural language processing, including experience conducting statistical analyses with text data, evaluating and implementing machine learning methods for text data, and strong understanding of text representation techniques 
• Strong familiarity with language modeling and natural language techniques, including strong understanding of the core concept underlying the design of small language models (SLMs) and large language models (LLMs)  
• Substantial experience writing code in Python and working with open-source NLP libraries such as transformers and NLTK 
• Substantial experience working with text data from legal, policy, and social science contexts, such as legal filings, statutes, and regulations 
• Familiarity with the core concepts underlying multi-modal (e.g., text-to-speech, text-to-video, etc.) generative AI systems and experience working with multi-modal datasets 
• Familiarity with popular approaches and frameworks for monitoring and evaluating AI-enabled systems, especially generative AI systems 
• Professional or research experience developing software and strong familiarity with common software engineering practices such as version control, testing, and code reviews 
• Experience developing documentation of technical products and systems tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences 
• Experience working with cloud services (e.g. Amazon Web Services, Azure) a nice to have 
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technologists without NLP expertise and non-technical stakeholders 
• Excellent project management and collaboration skills, with a track record of partnering with cross-functional teams to translate organizational needs into technical solutions

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the DevOps Engineering Manager will provide technical leadership and operational oversight for the DevOps function, overseeing a team responsible for shared infrastructure and operational enablement across data, analytics, and product engineering teams. This role partners closely with cross-functional leaders to align on priorities, manage tradeoffs, and ensure that infrastructure, deployment practices, and platform operations scale sustainably alongside growing security, reliability, and experimentation demands. 

The ideal candidate is a systems-oriented engineering leader who combines hands-on technical expertise with pragmatic people management to build and scale reliable and secure mission-critical infrastructure. They will lead DevOps engineers while also contributing directly to the architectural design and incident response needs of the products and tools used in the ecosystem. They are comfortable partnering cross-functionally with multiple discipline stakeholders, to align DevOps strategy with the mission of the ACLU, navigating ambiguity in requirements, competing priorities, early risk mitigation, and scalable operating practices.

• Provide direct people management and individualized support to a team of skilled DevOps engineers, fostering their continued growth and impact
• Actively prioritize DevOps work across steady-state operations and major initiatives, managing team capacity and clearly surfacing risks, constraints, and tradeoffs to engineering leadership 
• Own cross-functional coordination for DevOps work, communicating workplans, sequencing, dependencies, and progress updates to partner teams 
• Translate large, ambiguous initiatives into actionable plans by breaking work into well-scoped phases, sequencing execution, and tracking delivery  
• Provide technical and architectural leadership for infrastructure and platform decisions, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with organizational standards 
• Serve as primary technical liaison to partner teams in IT and InfoSec, clarifying responsibility boundaries and ensuring alignment on platform strategy, security standards, timelines, and implementation details 
• Establish sustainable operational practices, including on-call coverage, incident response, escalation paths, and post-incident learning

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• Significant experience leading technical projects in a DevOps, SRE, infrastructure, or platform engineering role supporting production systems at scale 
• Demonstrated success in leading, coordinating, or directly managing engineers, including responsibilities for planning, prioritization, goal setting, and delivery outcomes 
• Hands-on experience deploying, managing, and optimizing production systems on major cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) 
• Experience establishing or improving DevOps practices, such as configuration management, monitoring and logging, incident response, and operational reliability 
• Experience with one or more server-side languages and frameworks (e.g. Python, Flask, PHP, node.js), with the ability to build or maintain infrastructure automation  
• Experience designing, implementing and scaling cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps workflows 
• Experience reviewing and contributing to code bases and Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g. Terraform, CDKTF, AWS CDK) 
• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g. Docker, ECS) 
• Experience with monitoring and observability tools (e.g., DataDog, New Relic, CloudWatch) 
• Experience acting as a technical point of contact and/or escalation point on critical production and/or architecture design challenges 
• Experience communicating technical options and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical partners 
• Proven ability to operate effectively in environments with ambiguity, competing priorities, and evolving requirements  
• Strong people leadership skills, including providing individualized feedback, mentorship, coaching, and support for professional development 
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and concisely 

PREFERRED QUALIFCATIONS

• Familiarity with database administration and optimization for production systems (e.g. Redshift, MySQL, MS SQL Server) 
• Experience partnering with security teams to implement baseline security controls, infrastructure changes, or secure-by-design practices 
• Experience supporting data or analytics workloads, including experimentation or research environments and compute- and storage-intensive systems
