Job Summary 

As a hardware signal integrity engineer you will develop, extract and simulate PCB structures to ensure that the high speed SERDES (112Gbps) and DDR interfaces perform correctly within the system budget. 

You will work closely with the PCB and package substrate CAD engineers to design component signal launches from BGA components and connectors, layer transition via structures, and cable interconnect. You will define the low-loss materials to be used for future designs and work closely with Graphcore’s system architecture team and suppliers to ensure the best possible performance is achieved. You will be an expert user of high-speed PCB simulation tools and be familiar with industry best practice in high-speed digital system design.

The Team

Graphcore’s Hardware Engineering Team creates both products for sale in volume production and hardware test & validation systems based on Graphcore’s IPU processor.

These systems allow Graphcore’s customers to develop leading-edge machine-leaning solutions for training and inference.

Responsibilities and Duties

Signal and Power Integrity specialist for the development of production systems and test boards for Graphcore’s family of processors.
Includes:

• Development of printed circuit board structures for high frequency (112Gbps, 16Gbps) SERDES interfaces, DDR interfaces 
• PCB stackup definition
• System, PCB and substrate level simulation and analysis of signal and power integrity
• Graphcore Integrated Circuit device interface requirements definition, tool & vendor relationships
• PCB design requirement and constraint definition, PCB layout supervision
• Prototype bring-up, evaluation, validation & system test

Candidate Profile 

• 5+ years’ experience in high-speed digital circuit development, with a deep understanding of signal and power supply integrity
• Knowledge of high-speed circuit design requirements to ensure signal integrity and robust rejection of interference and crosstalk is essential
• Experience of high frequency (tens of GHz) SERDES design and validation
• Experience with ANSYS SIWave, HFSS, and/or Mentor Hyperlynx Signal and Power Integrity tools
• High speed processor system design with experience in interfaces such as SERDES, PCI, DDR, Ethernet, etc.
• Design of BGA & connector pad launches, via structures and transmission lines for GHz signals.
• This position will require extensive practical work in the lab, bringing up, debugging and validating designs
• Expertise in the use of vector network analysers, high speed digital oscilloscopes, signal generators
• A rigorous approach is required to make sure designs will work correctly the first time
• Independent working and the taking of responsibility, with excellent cooperative and communications skills to work in a small team environment
• Experience working in a small team, which requires a wide range of skills, an eagerness to participate in all parts of the development cycle from concept to testing in the lab and supporting manufacture and customers.

• Own the end-to-end hardware design of UAV systems, from early-stage prototyping through to flight-ready builds
  
  
• Integrate mechanical, electronic, and sensor subsystems into cohesive, manufacturable drone architectures
  
  
• Develop and iterate physical prototypes rapidly, balancing performance, weight, and durability constraints
  
  
• Define and execute hardware validation and flight-readiness testing, including bench, integration, and field trials
  
  
• Collaborate closely with software, firmware, and avionics teams to ensure seamless hardware/software integration
  
  
• Produce clear design documentation, schematics, and BOMs in accordance with company quality standards
  
  
• Evaluate and select COTS components, working with suppliers to meet technical and programme requirements

• Define and own the end-to-end electronic architecture for marine robotic subsystems, ensuring consistency across hardware, software, AI, and navigation and control interfaces

• Lead the selection of components, define specifications, and establish electronic design standards that balance performance, cost, and manufacturability

• Collaborate with AI and software engineers to design hardware interfaces that support on-board inference, sensor fusion, and autonomous decision-making

• Work with navigation and control engineers to ensure electronic subsystems meet the requirements for guidance, communication, and real-time control

• Design schematics and PCB layouts in coordination with mechatronics engineers, ensuring proper form, fit, and function through analytical and simulation tools

• Mentor and guide engineers within the electronics discipline, raising the quality bar for design reviews, documentation, and technical decision-making

• Drive validation and verification campaigns — defining test strategies, performing hardware bring-up, and leading electrical troubleshooting to mature designs toward production readiness

• Produce and maintain comprehensive design documentation in line with Helsing's quality standards, including 2D/3D deliverables and manufacturing packages

• Hold a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline

• Have designed, built, and validated complex electronic systems from concept through to production (schematic capture, PCB layout, and hardware integration)

• Conduct hands-on failure analysis investigations
• Contribute to cross-discipline investigations spanning multiple time zones

Perform proactive engineering assessments, including evaluating design adequacy, identifying latent risks, and assessing whether alternative engineering decisions or mitigations could have prevented or reduced issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Requisite professional designations and work experience:
• Masters or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, or related science.
• Experience applying electrical and power systems engineering principles across battery systems, battery management systems (BMS), battery energy storage systems (BESS), electric vehicles (EVs), power electronics, and consumer electronics. Experience working with electrical systems, power electronics or electrochemical storage technologies in a laboratory or applied engineering environment.
• Demonstrated proficiency with CAD and analytical tools, including Altium, SPICE, and MATLAB, to support engineering analysis, design review, and technical investigations would be advantageous.
• Experience designing and executing experimental and test programmes, including circuit‑level prototyping, validation testing, and the use of electrical diagnostic and measurement equipment
• Experience assessing failure mechanisms alongside system‑level design and operational decisions in real‑world industrial applications. Excellent verbal and written communication
• Intellectual curiosity with a passion to investigate and explore a vast array of problems, both within and outside of their area of technical specialization
• Strong deductive reasoning skills
• Able to quickly assimilate relevant information in unfamiliar situations and develop creative approaches and solutions necessary to resolve complex problems
