The Role
Millions of people visit the Rightmove website every month. We have a huge amount of data about how people use the site, and what this means to our customers.
You’ll be joining our growing Data Engineer & Infrastructure team - a collaborative, high-performing group of engineers that uses this data to build the infrastructure that powers the UK’s favourite property site.
This is a hands-on engineering role, where you will implement and maintain the technical foundations on a modern GCP based data platform: from writing robust Python and SQL, to deploying infrastructure with Terraform, and ensuring our pipelines are reliable, secure, and efficient.
You take pride on executing the delivery of data engineering to the highest standards: building and maintaining batch and streaming data pipelines, managing ingestion and egress processes, supporting the analytics data layer that drives and powers all our reporting and insights to power our Products across the entire business.

Role Summary and Impact
As a Lead Data Engineer, based within our Wavemaker team, you will serve as the technical figurehead for the data engineering practice across WPP Media’s broader Business Intelligence & Data Engineering agency teams. You will be instrumental in defining, driving, and implementing best-in-market data engineering strategies and solutions, with a particular focus on the Measure data platform. You will work directly on Wavemaker clients and collaborate closely with the Wavemaker BI team, ensuring their data needs are met with cutting-edge solutions.
This is an influential role that combines deep hands-on technical expertise with strategic leadership. You will be responsible for setting technical standards, fostering a community of practice among all our engineers across the agencies, and ensuring the delivery of cutting-edge, commercially viable data solutions that empower data-driven decision-making for our clients and internal teams. While you will directly manage one individual, you will act as the most senior engineer in the wider team, providing technical direction and mentorship. You will also represent our data engineering capabilities in client pitches and external forums, demonstrating our leadership in the BI space.

The Role
We’re looking for a GCP Senior Data Engineer to join our growing Technology & Engineering team in London. You’ll work with Tier 1 financial institutions on cutting-edge transformation programmes, using your deep expertise in Google Cloud Platform to build robust, scalable data solutions. This role is ideal for engineers who thrive on innovation, take ownership of challenges, and enjoy working in collaborative, agile teams.
What You’ll Do
Design and build resilient, scalable data pipelines using GCP services such as BigQuery, Dataflow, and Dataproc.
Collaborate closely with clients to define business requirements and architect fit-for-purpose data solutions.
Apply engineering best practices across the SDLC, including CI/CD, testing, and version control using Git.
Support the migration of legacy on-premise systems to cloud-native architectures.
Champion data governance, security, and compliance, especially in regulated environments.
What We’re Looking For
Strong hands-on experience with GCP including BigQuery, Pub/Sub, Cloud Composer, and IAM.
Proven ability in Python, SQL, and PySpark; experience with data lakes, warehousing, and data modelling.
Demonstrated knowledge of DevOps principles, containerisation, and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions.
A track record of delivering data engineering solutions in agile environments.
Confident communication skills, able to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Bonus Points For
Experience with real-time streaming tools like Kafka or Spark Streaming.
Exposure to MLOps practices and maintaining ML models in production.
Familiarity with data visualisation tools such as Power BI, Qlik, or Tableau.
Experience of developing applications on VertixAI is preferable
Knowledge of both SQL and NoSQL solutions, and the ability to assess trade-offs between ETL and ELT.
