Under the hood, the AI layer orchestrates real business logic and APIs: integration packs, custom datasets and benchmarks, context control features, and our query and visualisation infrastructure.

Senior Flight Software Engineer - Neutron

SENIOR FLIGHT SOFTWARE ENGINEER – NEUTRON
As a Senior Flight Software Engineer based at Rocket Lab’s Auckland, New Zealand site, you will support the development of the next‑generation Command & Data Handling system for the Neutron launch vehicle. In this role, you will work across the full software stack to build core flight software, simulation frameworks, and development tools that enable mission‑critical applications. WHAT YOU’LL GET TO DO
- Develop core C++ flight software for the Neutron launch vehicle across embedded and application layers
- Build and maintain simulation frameworks for end‑to‑end mission validation and HITL integration
- Create Python‑based tools, including code generators and data‑analysis utilities
- Lead or contribute to architecture trades, design reviews, and backlog refinement
- Support the full software lifecycle—from planning and implementation to deployment of operational software
- Deliver high‑impact engineering projects spanning multiple teams and disciplines
YOU’LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or equivalent
- 5+ years of experience developing modern C++ and/or embedded software
- Experience with Python or similar scripting languages
- Experience with CI/CD, deployment tooling, Git, and issue tracking systems
- Demonstrated success working in fast‑paced environments with shifting priorities

We’re hiring an Intermediate Software Engineer who can take meaningful pieces of product, build them well, and ship them confidently in a collaborative, high-trust environment.

You’ll be responsible for delivering business value by designing and developing high-quality software in a highly collaborative environment. You’ll report to a Senior member of the Engineering team, and be trusted to self-manage your day-to-day work.
You will sit in that critical middle layer of engineering — capable, accountable, and growing into senior-level thinking.
The Work
You’ll spend your time building, improving, and collaborating.
Design & Development
- Develop clean, efficient, scalable software
- Build tools and applications that ship regularly into production
