Avionics Design Engineer I - Neutron

NEUTRON
Rocket Lab’s Neutron team is responsible for bringing our new large rocket Neutron and its launch and test sites to life. From designing and testing Neutron’s structures and components, to firing up its new Archimedes engines, to setting up Neutron’s launch pads and test sites across the United States, joining the Neutron team is your opportunity to help launch a new large rocket for the very first time.
About This Role
Join the Neutron Avionics Hardware team and play a crucial role in developing the next generation of launch vehicle technology. We're looking for a talented engineer to take ownership of mission-critical avionics components from initial concept through production readiness for the Neutron launch vehicle.
WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:
- Own and lead avionics components and subsystems, serving as the first point of contact in your area of responsibility
- Execute full lifecycle development of electronic components—from requirements gathering and prototyping through debugging, schematic capture, PCB layout, board bring-up, mechanical integration, testing, and production implementation
- Design and test digital, power, and analog sensing circuits for harsh aerospace environments
- Develop and execute test campaigns for avionics components, including computing modules and high-voltage systems, ensuring all requirements are fully met
- Create automation software in Python and C/C++ to interact with units-under-test, automated test equipment, and production ERP systems
- Conduct critical analyses including FMECA, derating, root-cause analysis for component failures, and risk assessments with mitigation strategies
- Collaborate cross-functionally with teams across the company to achieve ambitious program goals
- Review and approve engineering changes, schematics, PCB designs, test documentation, and other technical documents
- Develop documentation for test procedures, maintenance, and calibration of new systems while providing training and ongoing support
YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- 1+ years of experience with electronics hardware development from concept through production
- Strong understanding of instrumentation, interfaces, and sensors including power supplies, serial devices, switch topologies, accelerometers, thermocouples, RTDs, and 4-20mA sensors
- Hands-on proficiency with lab test equipment including power supplies, oscilloscopes, electronic loads, DMMs, function generators, and process calibrators
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ownership mentality with the ability to drive tasks and projects to completion independently
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify challenges and develop solutions that improve cost, quality, reliability, and delivery
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed
THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with environmental testing including vibration, shock, thermal, EMI/EMC, and TVAC
- Proficiency in Altium Designer

SPACE SYSTEMS
Rocket Lab’s Space Systems team is responsible for every satellite and satellite component made by Rocket Lab: from complete satellites destined for missions to the Moon and Mars, to the individual components and subsystems that make up a satellite like solar panels, flight software, reaction wheels and star trackers, separation systems, radios, and more. Our Space Systems team is made up of engineers, technicians, and designers who design, create, and put together our own satellites for missions across the commercial, government, and defence sectors, or who build and assemble satellite hardware and software that supports other satellite missions.
YOUR MISSION:
Based at our Auckland Production Complex as a Senior Spacecraft Operations Engineer, you’ll take ownership of spacecraft operations across a diverse and growing fleet - from LEO constellations to deep space exploration missions. You won’t just operate spacecraft - you’ll design how they’re operated, shaping automation, software, and mission success from concept to re-entry.
You’ll collaborate with world-class engineers across propulsion, flight software, GNC, and mission design - turning ambitious ideas into reality, fast.

- Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI (or related UI frameworks), C#, XAML, and — when needed — C++.
- Define and enforce best-practices for Windows desktop development across the codebase: code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+), and maintainability.
- Drive accessibility efforts: integrate and validate support for accessibility APIs (e.g. Microsoft UI Automation or other relevant Windows accessibility frameworks), ensure UI controls, focus management, keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and usability for users with disabilities.

Required:

- Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed code (.NET) and native code.
- Proven track record of designing, building, and shipping production-quality desktop applications, with an emphasis on reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability.
- Strong experience with accessibility APIs on Windows (e.g. Microsoft UI Automation or similar), and a dedication to building accessible and inclusive software.
- Excellent software engineering fundamentals: OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, multi-threading or asynchronous programming (where relevant).

As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in shaping the future of Ion Propulsion systems, from early-stage development through to scaled production. Flight software provides critical support to vehicle systems during launch and on orbit, operating launch vehicle and spacecraft avionics, collecting and distributing telemetry and commands, and hosting guidance, navigation and control software and algorithms. Flight Software Engineers are responsible for creation, maintenance, and support of software components, functions or services on the Electron launch vehicle, and associated ground-based communication systems.
WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:
- Develop, maintain, and support flight software for the Electron launch vehicle and associated ground-based communication systems.
- Design and implement embedded software for launch vehicle and spacecraft avionics computers.
- Create and execute unit tests in response to bug-fix and feature requests.
- Develop and maintain documentation for the operation and deployment of software products.
- Participate in and approve code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards and best practices.
- Facilitate and contribute to software architecture meetings and approve architecture designs.
- Refine and prioritize product backlog items, ensuring clear definitions of ready and done.
- Lead and participate in scrum activities, including stand-ups, retrospectives, and sprint planning.

About the role
Based in Auckland, NZ, the Senior HITL Engineer is responsible for designing, maintaining, and operating hardware in the loop (HITL) systems. You will support the Production, Electron, and Neutron organizations, with deliverables required from the business leadership team.
WHAT YOU’LL GET TO DO:
- Work within a small team dedicated to designing, operating, and maintaining the avionic test systems to support all of Rocket Lab’s mission from the production floor to the launch operations.
- Ensure the HITL systems are subjected to an appropriate level of engineering rigor and documentation.
- Work with other teams to verify the functionality and performance of the Rocket Lab avionics components.
- Operate launch vehicle simulation platform for Day of Launch operations for specific missions.
- Work hands-on with test and flight space hardware.
- Make and maintain accurate technical documentation via system diagrams, schematics, ICDs, procedures, test/anomaly reports.
- Analyze test results from raw data for pass/fail criteria.
- Troubleshoot root cause from anomalies and communicate the results and path forward with internal teams, vendors, and customers.
- Operate and capture data from test equipment (DMMs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, etc.).
- Prioritize, manage, and drive multiple projects at the same time.
- Work on the HITL standardization processes and automation.
- Provide technical expertise and training for the more junior HITL team members.
YOU’LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechatronics, electronics, computer science, aerospace engineering, or related field.
- 8+ years of engineering experience with hardware or software development.

About the role
