A quick look at the role
As the Fuels Manager, you'll take ownership of the planning, allocation and optimisation of fuel-grade waste disposal across the Biffa Group. Working at the heart of our operations, your team will drive smarter, more cost-effective disposal strategies, maximise contracted capacity, and play a key role in delivering our sustainability ambitions.
Acting as the central point of control between Biffa sites and third-party disposal outlets, you'll provide forecasting, risk management, performance insight and contractual management to ensure the best use of disposal capacity. You'll also play a key role in shaping and expanding our Fuels Team operating model, driving continuous improvement and supporting the future growth of the business.
Location: UK-wide, with the role based at any Biffa site across the country. A large amount of UK travel will be required as part of the role.
Your core responsibilities
- Manage the centralised allocation of waste tonnages to disposal outlets, optimising contracted capacity and alignment with the Group disposal strategy.
- Own short-, medium- and long-term forecasts for waste arisings and disposal capacity. Identifying communicating and managing constraints, opportunities and operational risks.
- Manage the fuel disposal budget, tracking spend and cost allocation while driving routing, allocation and utilisation efficiencies to deliver £/tonne targets.
- Management of existing disposal contracts and offtaker relationships and ensuring compliance with contract requirements. Resolution of issues with key stakeholders. Support on new disposal contract delivery when required.
- Act as the key interface between waste-generating and disposal sites, building strong relationships and ensuring adherence to allocation and capacity plans.
- Use data, reporting and analysis to improve forecasting accuracy, support decision-making and identify optimisation opportunities.
- Drive continuous improvement across scheduling, including routing efficiencies, blending opportunities, optimal disposal points for wastes and operational enhancements.
- Ensure team and disposal activities comply with health &safety, environmental and regulatory requirements, SOPs and SLAs. Create and update team procedures. Support on audits when required.
- Leading a team and owning their development.
- Partner with the Fuels team and wider business to support contract performance, cost control, disposal strategy and the rollout of the Fuels operating model, processes and governance.
Our essential requirements
- Experience in planning and scheduling within a logistics or operational environment, ideally within the waste industry.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, including good Excel capability, with experience of budget management and cost control.
- Experience of line management and developing team capability.
- GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent in Mathematics and English Language.
- Full UK driving licence, with the ability to travel as required.
Desirable
- Experience using logistics and/or planning software.
- Experience or knowledge of waste-to-fuels operations.
